Department of Work Environment

At the Department of Work Environment (DWE) at UMass Lowell, the emphasis is on preventing work-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths simultaneous with the promotion of the health and safety of both the workers and the general environment. Our curriculum focuses on identification, assessment, and prevention of chemical, ergonomic, safety and other hazards to human health.

Our concern with the work environment also encompasses the psychosocial stressors of the workplace that affect workers' health and job performance and the employer's productivity.

Our faculty is internationally recognized for research and teaching. Interdisciplinary faculty-student collaborations enrich all our educational and research activities. We are a small graduate program with a diverse student body which brings vibrancy and a truly global perspective to our classes and research. Many students attend the program in the evening, while working full-time in industries throughout New England.

Meet some of our current students in Occupational Ergonomics and Safety. We will be introducing other concentrations soon.
