It’s official!  The Alternative Spring Break Service Club is sponsoring two trips this year.  One group will work with the Tohono O’odham Nation in AZ (http://www.tonation-nsn.gov) and the other will help establish an ASB exchange with the Los Patojos program in Jocotenango, Guatemala (http://www.risingminds.org/) while farming and working with their 60+ youth.  To make these trips affordable for our UML students, we are again Raking Leaves for Donations.  If you or anyone you know needs their leaves raked before the holidays, please contact us.  Cash or checks made out to UMass Lowell – ASB (Tax deductible as allowed by law.)

The University of Massachusetts Lowell Choir and Chamber Singers have been invited to perform at the 125th anniversary celebration of the parish of St. Joseph. The will perform Handel's "Messiah" (part one) and Britten's Ceremony of Caroles with harp accompaniment. The event is free (with a freewill offering encouraged) and open to the public.

Sponsored by Student Activities & Leadership, “Movies that Rock!” will be shown on three different nights, in three different locations. This week: “Funny People,” a story about a comic superstar facing his own mortality, and it  features Adam Sandler, Seth Rogers and Leslie Mann.

Dr. Willie Wilson of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will present "Berry stone viruses:  30-years of climate control and face cream." All are invited to attend!

College of Engineering Open Ice Skating. All students, staff and faculty from UMass Lowell College of Engineering are encouraged to come and skate! Skates are provided by the Arena.

No plans on Thanksgiving? A local church has extended a Thanksgiving invitation to the entire UMass Lowell community, especially to students who may be far from home. Faculty, staff, and alums are all also welcome to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, fun, and friendship. Feel free to invite others. The event is free.

Yearbook Senior Portraits will be taken Dec. 1-4 for those graduating in Dec 2009, Spring 2010, and Summer 2010. Students must schedule an appointment. The only way to be in the yearbook is to have your picture taken at UMass Lowell, there are no outside photos accepted. $5 Sitting Fee.

Six panels of the NAMES Project Foundation AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display throughout the week. Each panel has been personally crafted to honor someone who has been lost to AIDS, and much of the display will have panels from the local area

First in a series of events under the UML FIRST (Faculty Insights on Research, Scholarship, and Teamwork). The topic will be Clean Energy, specifically focusing on Photovoltaics, Wind Energy, System Integration, Storage, Batteries, Fuel Cells, Green Buildings, Energy Policy, and more… Refreshments will be provided.

The String Ensemble Fall Concert presents an exciting new formation: the UML Cello Ensemble!  Together with their new teacher, Aristides Rivas, they will feature works by Apocalyptica, a band playing Metallica with four cellos, paired with Psalm and Fugue for String Orchestra by Alan Hovhaness, a work that transforms practically any performance space into a cathedral and Villa Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 arranged for two violas & six celli. In a series of nine suites by this most significant Brazilian composer, each represents a fusion between Brazilian folk and popular music and the style of Johann Sebastian Bach - an irresistible combination!  The concert is free & open to the public!

Give the Gift of Reading to the Children of Lowell – Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, will be collecting pre-school children’s books (picture books) to donate from the University to Children’s Corner (Community Teamwork) and the Family Literacy Center in Lowell. Books can be new or “gently used.”

Join the English Department's Common Text Program for screenings and discussions of films related to Class Matters, UMass Lowell's Common Text for Fall 2009. Today: "Caddyshack" (Harold Ramis, 1980).
