Patrons with Disabilities

The University Libraries welcome all persons with disabilities to the three library facilities.  The Libraries are committed to providing all patrons with excellent service and equal access to library resources. Patrons with disabilities are encouraged to communicate with Library staff to ensure they are assisted properly.

All three library facilities will be handicapped accessible by Fall 2006.  The Center for Lowell History is accessible with assisted entry to the first floor public area.  O'Leary Library is fully accessible with automatic door openers allowing unassisted entry.  Construction has begun at Lydon Library on a completely accessible entrance to the first floor.  This entrance is expected to be completed in October 2006.  The upper floors at Lydon and O'Leary Libraries are fully accessible by elevator but many of the book aisles are narrow and may be difficult for people using wheel chairs or walkers.  The Access Services staff is happy to provide assistance in the book stacks.  Please inform the staff at the circulation desk if such assistance is necessary.

Handicapped accessible restrooms are located on O'Leary Library second floor and Lydon Library second floor.

Reference and research help is available at the Reference Desks at both libraries. Reference librarians with specialties in various academic disciplines are available to help with research by email or phone or by appointment.  The Electronic Reference Centers (ERC) on the first floors of Lydon and O'Leary Libraries feature several tables with adjustable height surfaces for wheelchair users.  Public printers are also accessible to wheelchair users.

For vision impaired patrons, the library offers ZoomText™ software, which magnifies text on computer screens, at O'Leary Library.  An Optilec™ document enlarger is also available at O'Leary Library in first floor microfilm area.

Library patrons are encouraged to visit and take advantage of services offered by the Office of Disability Services located on O'Leary Library second floor.
